The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has granted a waiver to Godwin Obaseki, governor of Edo state, and Philip Shaibu, his deputy, to contest the June 23 governorship primaries.
As a new member of the party, the governor needed to be given clearance before participating in the primary election.
The governor, resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday and amidst speculations defected to the PDP earlier on Friday.
Obaseki had been denied a ticket by the screening committee of the APC when he sought reelection.
The APC screening committee for the governorship primaries gave a defective certificate as reason for disqualifying Obaseki .Adams Oshiomhole, suspended national chairman of the APC, was accused of hijacking the process.
Addressing PDP members in Benin on Friday, Obaseki said he had found the energy he required to take Edo to the next level.”
