ANNUAL GRAMMY AWARDS: And the winner is, Angelique Kidjo_Ogar Erik

The 62nd annual Grammy awards kicked off on January 26th .
Nigeria was ecstatic at the nomination of of burna boy for the best world music album category and were eagerly looking forward to him bringing the Grammy home.

The Grammy Award for Best World Music Album is an honour presented to recording artists for quality albums in the world music genre.
Burna however has lost to Beninese singer-songwriter, Angelique Kidjo.
Angelique Kidjo beat Burna Boy, Altin Gün, Bokanté & Metropole Orkest Conducted By Jules Buckley, Nathalie Joachim & Spektral Quartet to win the award.

This is her fourth Grammy win in nine nominations, first of those nominations came in 1995. Her first win came in 2007 in the Best Contemporary World Music category. She also picked a Grammy each in the Best World Music Album category in 2014 and 2015 for the albums Eve and Sings respectively.

Apart from winning, Angelique Kidjo also performed during the pre-telecast segment of the ceremony on Sunday evening.
Kidjo is noted for her diverse musical influences and creative music videos. She is fluent in five languages: Fon, French, Yorùbá, Gen (Mina), and English.
African Giant is Burna Boy’s fourth studio album. It was released on July 26, 2019, features Kidjo on the song “Different”.

The album also has guest appearances from Zlatan, Jorja Smith, Jeremih, Serani, M.anifest, Damian Marley, Future and YG.
African Giant was ranked at number 63 on Vice’s list of the 100 Best Albums of the 2010s.

Whilst Nigerians continue to rage off the disappointment on social media , it is noteworthy that Angelique Kidjo is a legend in the African music scene, her album “Celia” peaked at number 8 on the billboards whilst burna boys album “African giant” peaked at number 104.

Before the release of African giant , Burna boy had a very good year and even went on to do greater things with the album and its tour which sold out numerous arenas outside the country.

Burna boy is a legend in the making and will no doubt bring home a Grammy in his own time.
Angelique Kidjo in a show of legendary empathy dedicated her award to Burna boy and showered accolades on him.
That in itself is a win for the African giant.
