NIGERIAN WOMEN WALK FOR SPEEDY PROSECUTION OF RAPE CASES_Ada Nkong

As part of activities to mark 16 days of advocacy to end violence against women, Nigerian woman, Monday in Abuja walked to the Supreme court led by the Minister of women affairs, Same Pauline Tallen.

The work which started from eagle square saw Nigerian women from all works of life in their numbers carrying placards and chanting ” No means No”, “real men don’t rape”,” Stop rape now” among others.

Speaking at the Supreme court where the walk terminated, the Minister of women affairs lamented the growing number of rape cases reported that cuts across all ages.

“Rape cases are increasing at an alarming rate. It is heart breaking to know that women are living with such pain”.

She called on the apex call to prevail on the judiciary to ensure rape victims get Justice.

” We are calling on Nigerian benchers to ensure speedy prosecution of perpetrators to end impunity and ensure Justice for all”.

” No victim of rape should suffer injustice “.

” No offender should go free”.

The Director Litigation of the supreme Court, Ibrahim Gold who received the delegation harped on the need to educate victims to come forward and speak out for themselves. He assured the women that their message was well received.

A staff of UN Women who spoke off record said, ” we have enough laws, it is prosecution of rape cases that is lacking”.
