As the people of Ogoja continue to appeal to President Buhari for the creation of a Federal University of technology for them, one-time Attorney General of Cross River state and former Director-General CRS Border Community Development Commission, Barr Leo Aggrey has called on President Muhamadu Buhari to assent to the bill seeking to establish the Federal University of Technology, Ogoja to create meaningful impact in the socio economic and educational emancipation of the people of Ogoja province.
Speaking in a telephone interview with Newsmen, Barr Leo Aggrey, who was a one-time chairman of Ogoja LGA lamented that the people of Ogoja have long been neglected and lack Federal presence., adding that this singular move by the National Assembly to pass a bill for the establishment of Federal University of Technology in Ogoja is a welcome development.
“We must commend our son Rt Hon Jarigbe Agom for thinking it wise to drive the process through the National Assembly. As far as all can see, he has done his part and it is time for all of us in the old Ogoja province to rise up and appeal to President Buhari to sign the bill. He should put smiles on our faces just like he has done to the people of Daura his home town in their bill seeking to establish a Federal Polytechnic.”
Speaking further, Barr Aggrey pointed out that what is now required is for the team selected by Greater Ogoja Devolvement Initiative to meet with the governor Senator Ben Ayade and request that he leads them to see the president. According to him,
“As at today, His Excellency, Prof Ben Ayade, is not in town. We will keep in touch, as soon as he returns from his trip abroad; we will meet with him and request that he leads us to the president. We know him to be very passionate about this University Bill. You know that the bill on the table of the president has a lifespan, so we must act fast”.
Responding to the question of the rationality of the request for another Federal University in Ogoja when there exist a federal University in Calabar, Barr Aggrey argued that the request for this university of technology is for the entire south south geo political zone. The one located at Owerri is for the south east zone, Akure is for the South West, Minna is for the North Central zone and Yola is for the North East. “ For equity, justice and fairness, the people of South south geopolitical zone have expressed their collective resolve to stand with this bill. That explains why it received overwhelming support at the National Assembly. Therefore I call on President Buhari to complete the process by signing the bill into law.” He said.
It will be recalled that a group known as Greater Ogoja Development Initiative staged a peaceful rally recently calling on the President to assent to the bill seeking to establish Federal University of Technology in Ogoja.
