Following comparisons in some quarters between the trains currently on ground for the standard gauge and those seen in some African countries, the MD Nigerian Railway corporation, Mr Fidet Okhiria says, the country is improving on the trains ordered with some luxurious trains expected in the next two months.

In an exclusive interview with our correspondent in Abuja ,the MD says” people talk about the egg shape or bullet proof train, it is when you go into electric trains that you can do such designs. We are looking at tomorrow not today.”

” For diesel electric trains, we are doing the one available now.Nobody has complained about Abuja-Kaduna, the comfort in it, but we are improving on the next set that are coming.”

” We are expecting two sets of DMUs which are close to the egg shape. We are moving gradually, if you run more than your feet, you fall.”

Responding to questions on the excess passengers on Abuja-Kaduna rail line Mr Okhiria said

” When demand outstretches supply, you have that problem. We ordered coaches before hand, rolling stock and locomotives are not what you go to shoprite and buy. You must have it designed.”

“We are hoping within the next two to three months, we will get our coaches.Next week we are moving two coaches from Itakpe to Abuja but that will not solve the problem. It is frequency of service that will solve it so that when passengers miss a train, they know they can wait for the next one coming in an hour.”

Talking about e- ticketing, the MD said ” We are trying to. The e- ticket thing is gradually coming to a close. The business case has been done.Today is 17th, the day to finalise it.”

” We are working on the necessary barriers and security to monitor and control the crowd that will result when people can buy tickets easily “
