Her heart was beating wildly, The sound could compete favourably with any set of drums in a band. She was torn between playing too sleepy to comprehend the question and giving the answer that he had been asking for when he repeated the question. “When last did you hear from Samuel?” The deciding factor was when he added the accusation ” of course you can’t deny that you too have been in touch, you have been sleeping with him.” Her fear melted away and in its place came anger, an anger borne out of her innocence.
“He called me yesterday, that is the first time he has called me, I have neither seen him nor slept with him”, she retorted. Of course he didn’t believe her and went on to say a lot of hurtful things to her. To Lima his words had lost the power to hurt her. He had said them too often and in any case she had been innocent of his accusations. She heaved a sigh of relief, now that it was out in the open, she had peace.
After a fitful sleep, she woke at her usual time, fixed breakfast and went off to work. Thank God she had few classes to teach. She really felt drained of energy but being the Lina she was, it wasn’t going to get in the way of her job.
The bell for break couldn’t have come at a better time, she hurried back to the staff room she shared with 12 other teachers. As she settled down on her seat, her phone rang. Even before she picked it, her intuition told her it was him again. “Hello”, she said tunelessly into the mouth piece.” Hi Madam” came the response, ” just checking up on you”.
How could she warn him to stop calling as she had planned? He hadn’t said anything wrong. Then he went on to shock her, “your husband called me” he said. She went straight into panic mood, “what did he say” ” what did you tell him”? He started laughing, a sound that had always thrilled her,he laughed like a baby. ” Relax, I didn’t say anything to him,Samuel tried to allay her fears.” He asked me to stop calling you but I told him you are an adult and should tell me that yourself “. She didn’t know when she burst out laughing. She knew Samuel was very stubborn and could imagine the conversation in her mind.
They went on to chit chat and he got off the phone after she assured him that her husband didn’t lay a finger on her. When he got off the phone finally, she felt strangely lonely. It had been nice talking with him again. For the first time in a long time she had talked to a male without feeling like she was in an Inquisition.
She felt lighter in her heart and went about the rest of her lessons with a smile. Too bad marriage was so permanent and yes her Husband was right, forever seemed like a very long time for the first time to her.
If only she could turn back the hands of time!
