The death toll into the series of explosions that rocked sri Lanka yesterday leaving about 500 injured has risen to 290.

In what has been described as the worst attack since the civil war ended ten years ago, churches and hotels were targeted.

Nearly all victims were Sri Lankan. Though dozens of foreigners were also killed.

No body has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The police say investigation into the bombings will examine reports that the intelligence community failed to detect or warn of possible suicide attacks before the violence.

A curfew that was in place overnight following the bombings has been lifted though the streets in the capital, Colombo, were largely deserted on Monday morning, with most shops closed and a heavy deployment of soldiers and police.
